A new leak highlighting the change in Terms of Service (ToS) on WhatsApp has hit the Web, courtesy of WABetaInfo. WhatsApp version 2.18.57 that was recently submitted to the Play Beta Program was torn down by the folks revealing important details on the changes that the next update will bring. In it, WhatsApp seems to have modified its Terms of Service which nearly all user just skips through.
The new Terms of Service mention Facebook Companies which WhatsApp will share a user’s data with. WhatsApp states that the data it shares with Facebook’s companies will only be used to provide better services to the cross-platform messaging app. It also reaffirms that any user’s data including private details like the phone number will not be shared with Facebook or its companies until a user decides.
The ToS also lists the ways in which WhatsApp works with these Facebook companies which provide data, operational infrastructure and access to their technology, tools. It goes on to disclose that WhatsApp also takes the help of Facebook companies to gather information about a particular feature on its app. WhatsApp along with Facebook companies will allow for a more seamless sharing between different platforms.
“For example, you may be able to share a Facebook or Instagram post with your friends on WhatsApp. We also work with Facebook Companies to promote and offer our Services to people who use other Facebook Company Products,” it reads.
Another interesting detail in the new ToS indicates that WhatsApp may soon start promoting businesses which in turn will offer information about their services along with sponsored content and advertisements. The instant messaging service will start working with Facebook companies to promote these businesses on Facebook as well which may allow users to directly start a conversation with a particular business on WhatsApp. Users will have an option to manage these through ad settings in the menu.
WhatsApp may not advertise on its platform directly, but this ToS will surely allow for a more direct promotion of businesses on the messaging platform.
As far as sharing user’s data with parent company Facebook is considered, WhatsApp doesn’t seem to have an alternative other than refining its approach towards advertising and promotions of businesses.
