Sessions Hits Back At ‘False Charges’ Of Lying About Trump Russia Connections: ‘That Is A Lie’

Jeff Sessions used his opening statement before the House Judiciary Committee today in order to refute accusations that he lied about what he knew of the Trump campaign’s connections with Russia.

Sessions’ credibility has been challenged recently by critics who have noted inconsistencies in his previous Congressional testimony, as well as his claimed lack of knowledge that Trump staffers told him about their dealings with Russia. On Tuesday, the attorney general called these accusations “false charges,” adding that he did not recall

George Papadopoulos or

Carter Page‘s activities, and that he would not have authorized them to represent the campaign before the Russian government.

“I’ve always told the truth,” Sessions said, “And I have answered every question as I understood them to the best of my recollection as I will continue to do today.”

Sessions went on to say that President

Donald Trump‘s campaign was “brilliantly” run, but “in many ways, it was a form of chaos every day from Day One.” He continued to insist that his story about the Trump campaign has never changed, even as he noted that he was asked to recall details about events that happened a year ago.

“In all of my testimony, I can only do my best to answer all of your questions as I understand them to the best of my memory,” Sessions said. “But I will not accept and reject accusations that I have ever lied under oath. That is a lie.”

There have been three known instances where Sessions had to amend his previous testimony with regard to what he knew about the campaign’s Russian contacts. Page and Papadopoulos both worked under Sessions during the 2016 election, and both of them say they informed him of their interactions with Russian officials.
