Muriel's Wedding Musical Coming To The Stage In 2017

Muriel and Rhonda will live on as stage creations. It was announced on Thursday that beloved 1994 film Muriel’s Wedding is set to become a musical, debuting in Australia next year.

Called Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, the new adaptation will feature a book written by original director-writer PJ Hogan, and original music by singer-songwriters Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. (Songs by ABBA, which factor heavily in the original Muriel’s Wedding, will also be included.)

Global Creatures and the Sydney Theatre Company will produce Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, which will premiere on Nov. 6, 2017 at Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre and run through to Dec. 30, 2017.

Released in 1994, the original film starred Toni Collette as the title character Muriel — a socially awkward, ABBA-obsessed woman with dreams of upping her social status and finding success through marriage — whose life changes for the better when she meets the outgoing Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths).

Hogan will update his original script for musical, which is not a sequel to the film. Speaking last year for EW’s Reunions issue, Hogan said he didn’t have plans for a proper continuation of >Muriel’s Wedding as the original film felt “complete.”

“I’ve been asked a lot, will there ever be a sequel? And to be honest, I’ve never really… the story felt so complete to me,” he said. “They drive over a hill and you don’t see them again. A lot of people have given me their versions of what happened to Muriel and Rhonda. I’ve heard that Muriel stayed married to the swimmer. I’ve heard Muriel didn’t stay married to the swimmer — she was true to her word and she married Brice, the Matt Day character. Other people have said Muriel and Rhonda are clearly in love and they married each other. And you know what? All could be true! The most important sequel is the one playing out in the viewer’s head.”
