January 13th, 2018 - ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University women's basketball had its starting five score all but two of the team's points, but that was more than enough as the team knocked off American Southwest Conference West Division leader University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 68-63, at Kimbrell Arena. The victory moved the War Hawks (9-6, 7-2 ASC) into a tie in the standings with the Cru (14-3, 7-2 ASC).
The win was the second-consecutive victory, and third in the last four games, for McM. With nine regular season games remaining in 2017-18, the War Hawks have already matched last year's win total for the entire season.
But knocking off the Cru took another strong – as well as mature – effort from a very young roster for McM head coach Brittany Densman-Roes. In a contest that saw 10 lead changes and four ties, the War Hawks rock solid down the stretch. McM overcame a 34-27 halftime deficit to lead by one after three periods, 50-49.
With 4:22 left to play, the Cru lead by one, 61-60. McMurry would reel off six unanswered points on a jumper by Sham Hunter, a pair of free throws from Sarah Doherty and a Isabel Carrion layup to take a 66-61 lead with just 13 seconds remaining to ice the win.
"It's great that we're – physically - doing some things," Densman-Roes said of her team's growth. "But I really think the changes have happened between our ears. I'm really proud of our poise. I tell them all the time momentum can change, officiating can change and great teams are going to make runs. UMHB is a great team and they made a run, but we held tight and didn't get defeated. I'm really proud of the way we executed our plan."
Sophomore Monica Jones led all scorers with 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half alone. Joes was 5-of-16 from the field and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, after the War Hawks failed to connect on a trey in the first half as a team.
For the fifth-consecutive game, sophomore forward Skyler Reyna notched a double-double game. Reyna had 17 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. Reyna was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field, while also registering game-high totals with four assists and three steals.
Carrion was McM's third double-figure scorer with 14 points, as well as grabbing five rebounds. Carrion was 5-for-10 from the field and went 4-for-4 from the free throw stripe.
Hunter had nine points, six rebounds and three steals to her credit. Doherty finished with seven points. McMurry's only bench points came via a London Weilert bucket.
The War Hawks' defense forced the Cru into 18 turnovers.
McMurry will begin a two-game road trip next Thursday (5:30 p.m.) when the team travels to Alpine to face Sul Ross State University.
