HENDERSON Charles E. March 6, 1937 February 20, 2017 Charles E. (Charlie) Henderson, 79, of Boones Mill, Va., passed away at his home on Monday, February 20, 2017, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on March 6, 1937, to Robert E. Sr. and Mae Likens Henderson. His parents predeceased him along with his brothers, David D. Henderson and Robert E. Henderson Jr. Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Judy King Henderson; his adoring children, Jeffrey A. (Ginger) Henderson, Krista D. Henderson and Brian T. (April) Henderson; grandchildren, Logan Henderson, Savannah Henderson, Caleb Henderson and Cara Henderson; brother, R. Ray (Shirley) Henderson; two sisters, June H. (Carl) Lowe and Genevieve H. Grant; sisters-in-law, Genevieve C. Henderson and Nancy H. (James) Boyd; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lloyd (LJ) and Sue King, Randy and JoAnne King; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. He was retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad where he worked as a machinist in the A&R shop. Charles was an avid horseman throughout his entire life working with horses in nearly every capacity from trail riding, showing, judging, training and shoeing. He cherished the many friendships he made over the years through horses and was always grateful for time spent in the saddle with friends and family. His other interest was Old Time Music. Charles was a self-taught musician and was proficient at playing the guitar, fiddle and claw hammer banjo. He was very proud to be part of the Rockbridge Pickers and to bring joy to others through his gift of music. Charles will be fondly remembered by all for his sense of humor and willingness to help others. The family is most grateful for all our dear friends, family, and neighbors. The family would like to sincerely thank all the wonderful Generation Solutions staff who cared for him over the last several months at home, especially Ashley and Sierra, for their compassionate care during his final week. A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Oakey's South Chapel with Dr. Dane McBride presiding. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Oakey's South Chapel and an hour prior to the service on Thursday. The family suggests that anyone wishing to do so, may donate to the Roanoke Valley Horseman's Association or to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
