IT was one of the shock showbiz splits of 2017.
But two months after dropping this bombshell — and her first album in over a decade — >FERGIE >JOSH DUHAMEL
>FERGIEhas shed light on the secrets behind the end of her eight-year marriage to Hollywood hunk
In the latest edition of my Bizarre Life podcast, the former
BLACK EYED PEAS frontwoman reveals the couple, parents to four-year-old Axl, had been considering trying for a second child before things crumbled.
Fergie tells me: “It was a conversation about, ‘OK, do we start our next baby or start a new album?’
“I knew I didn’t want to do them at the same time. It’s too much, you know?
“A child is something you have to focus on and make sure everything’s padded around them — not put all the other pressures on top of having a second child and doing an album, that’s just ludicrous to me.
“Josh was actually the one who said, ‘You know what, you should go back into the studio and make some music’.
“I remember crying a lot of times going into the studio because it was so hard to leave my kid.
“It was just this weird feeling I’ve never felt in my life before.
“I was like, ‘What is this mummy guilt? What the hell is this?’ So it was quite awful sometimes.”
It's emotional being asked about the split
New album Double Dutchess marks Fergie’s return as a solo artist, 11 years after stepping out on her own.
That’s a long time away for one of the most successful pop stars of the 2000s.
But the album’s emotional topics of troubled romance are heart-wrenching and clear in light of her sudden split, which Fergie admits to me she continues to find tough.
She says: “It’s still emotional, just being asked about it.
“You’re a human being, we’re not robots.
“Emotions are going to come to the surface. I couldn’t tell everybody, ‘Oh hey, guess what, the album’s taking so long because I’m going through some stuff right now’.
“Some days are better than others and we’re both working really hard right now on our careers.
“We’re both full-time and very ultra-loving parents.
“We’re really trying our best to make sure Axl feels filled with love and that we are his parents.”
Fergie and Josh — who married in Malibu in 2009 — shocked fans in mid-September when they announced they had split after being apart for months without anyone knowing.
But with the break-up clearly still so raw, does she hold out hopes for a reconciliation?
She says: “So many things have happened in my life, I would never say never, but right now we are not thinking in that direction.”
Fergie is now functioning as her own executive producer after releasing her new record through her own label Dutchess Music, an imprint of BMG.
Yet despite going at it alone, she assures me in my Bizarre Life podcast — which you can subscribe to on iTunes, Apple Podcasts or your favourite podcast provider — that her future with The Black Eyed Peas, who she rose to fame with in 2003, is far from over despite rumours that she had quit for good in June.
And she still holds out hope for her dream second baby.Fergie admits to Wendy Williams she wanted to be 'together forever' with ex Josh Duhamel
She says: “I’ve never left The Black Eyed Peas. We’ve never broken up officially, I guess we’re just on a break. We’re family. They’re like my work family. That’s for ever.
“Honestly, I would have loved to be able to do my album in one tenth of the time, do a Black Eyed Peas album in that same time, tour both, have another child. There’s just not enough hours in the day.”
You can’t knock her ambition.

She said: “We’re talking, we love each other, we’d love it to happen.”
