Kota Marudu Flood Victim In Labour Rescued By Firemen

KOTA MARUDU: "I am grateful that the firemen and clinic staff came to our rescue, otherwise my wife would have to wade through 1.5 kilometres of floodwaters to deliver the baby," said Mohd Aidie Lorence. They were amongst the Kampung Parong villagers affected in floods early Tuesday morning. Mohd Aidie, 36, said his wife Suriah Bakar, 35, is pregnant with their third child and was expected to deliver next week. She was scheduled to come to the clinic at Kampung Lotong here Tuesday morning.

However, as their village was flooded this morning, they had to call the health clinic and later the Fire and Rescue Department.

"The water level was waist-high and the currents strong, and coincidentally, none of the villagers have any boat.

"We are thankful to the firemen and clinic for helping us... only Allah is able to repay their kindness," he said when contacted.

Mohd Aidie said this is the third time that their house was flooded since last December. Floodwaters have been recorded as high as 1.5 metres. Meanwhile, the department spokesperson said they received call on the evacuation of pregnant woman at 9.55am. "After receiving information from the clinic, a boat was despatched to the village to move the woman to the clinic," he said. Meanwhile, the heavy rain which started Monday night saw 118 villagers evacuated to two temporary relief centres at Sekolah Kebangsaan Teritipan and Rukun Tetangga Salimandut building here. Sabah Civil Defence department director Kamal Mokhtar said the heavy downpour since 5pm yesterday had flooded Kampung Beliajung and Kampung Salimandut. In Tuaran, Kampung Bunga at Tenghilan and Kampung Topokon in Tamparuli were hit by flash floods. However, there was no evacuation. As of 3pm, 119 villagers from Kampung Kuranji and Kg Popok Darat were placed at the community hall here, while all 117 flood victims housed at SK Teritipan and Salimandut Rukun Tetangga building had been allowed to return home. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
