Other than Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s A Aa, the other movie to hit the screens this week was Karthik Subbaraj’s multistarrer Iraivi. It stars Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha and SJ Suryah in crucial roles. From the get go, Karthik promised it to be a film that will focus on problems that Indian women face in today’s society. In spite of choosing such an emotionally charged subject, it looks like Iraivi was not as impactful as everyone expected it to be. The film received mixed reviews from both fans and critics alike. Here is what some of the critics had to say about the Vijay Sethupathi starrer…
Behindwoods gave a very average rating to the movie and said that it is a film drags on a bit due to slow screenplay, but gets redeemed by brilliant performances from SJ Suryah and Bobby Simha. But the fact that it was not up to Karthik Subbaraj’s usual standards pulled it down. Here is their exact verdict,” Don’t shut yourself down if you hear that it is not an out and out entertainer, rather make yourself vulnerable to this work and you will not regret it.”
Reviewer Avinash Gopinath of Filmibeat was also very critical of the film and felt that the director was inefficient in handling so many characters and driving his point home. The cast mismanagement and the slow and painful narration are the reasons Iraivi ends up being an average film. He concludes that,” Iraivi is an honest attempt by Karthik Subbaraj. But it looks like the director has bitten off more than he can chew.”
IndiaGlitz had a much more positive reaction to the Karthik Subbaraj film. They too really praised SJ Suryah and called his performance an intense experience. They were also really happy with the performances of Bobby Simha, Anjali, Pooja and Vijay Sethupathi, who perfectly underplayed his star presence to make it as realistic as possible. On the whole, they were thoroughly impressed with Iraivi and this was their final verdict,” A hard hitting film that has power packed performances from the top notch lead cast that is worth the watch.”
Galatta too was super impressed with Iraivi and the power packed performances of the entire cast. They were also appreciative of excellent cinematography and background score by Santhosh Narayanan which enhanced the narrative even further. In their words,” IRAIVI is a reflective tale of the struggle between love and liberty… It will keep you engaged till the end!”
Hindustan Times were not at all happy with this attempt by Karthik Subbaraj and felt that the story just went astray. They called the theme really depressive and pointless, although the performances from the entire cast managed to impress them. But in the end here’s what they had to say,”There is very little to cheer (the bottles of liquor merely adding to the depression) in the 160-minute work, which, though has some interesting performances by Simha, Surya and Anjali.”
So that concludes the review roundup of Iraivi, which received a lukewarm response from the critics at the very best. You can read their comments here and figure out if this Karthik Subbaraj flick is worth watching this week.
