Raleigh, N.C. — With below-freezing temperatures hitting much of the Triangle on New Year's Day, most people chose to celebrate the holiday indoors.
For others, though, the first day of the new year beckons them outdoors on the trails of our state parks. "I guess you really should start the year with what you plan to do for the rest of the year," said Anna Lee Bloomfield, who started her year with a run at Umstead State Park.
Anna Lee and her father, Peter Bloomfield, are from New York, so they're familiar with cold weather. "But this is pretty much chilly for anyone, I'd say," said Peter.
How do they stay warm on such a frigid day? With layers. "Just wear multiple layers, like hats and gloves, so you can take them off when you get hot," said Anna Lee.
Although chill extremes can make outdoor exercise unsafe even with warm clothing, health experts with Mayo Clinic agree, saying exercise is safe for almost everyone, even in cold weather.
However, people with certain chronic health issues -- like asthma or heart problems -- should check with their doctor before exercising.
