People who hold to the view that Melania Trump is a Rapunzel-like figure held captive in the White House imagine the various ways she signals her desire to rebel.
That theory came into play Monday when the First Lady Sunday night mysteriously liked a tweet linking to a progressive talk show video that questions how she obtained a so-called “Einstein” visa in 2001, the New York Daily News reported. The “like” came from her personal Twitter account, not her White House-issued FLOTUS account, the Daily News said, sharing a screen shot of her Twitter feed.

As President Donald Trump and the first lady welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara to the White House Monday, the Daily News explained how the eight-minute video in question comes from “The David Pakman Show.” The show is a syndicated TV feature available on YouTube that is hosted by liberal commentator David Pakman.
His clip, titled “How Exactly Did Melania Trump Get an ‘Einstein Visa?'” looks at how Melania Trump — Melania Knavs in 2001 — a Slovenian model dating real estate mogul Donald Trump, gained an EB-1 program highly competitive work visa that is usually reserved for immigrants of “extraordinary ability” and “sustained national and international acclaim,” according to a report in the Washington Post.
Pakman begins his show by saying, “We have every reason to believe she was working illegally here, modeling on a visa that doesn’t allow her to be doing any work.”
During the presidential campaign, there were questions about Melania Trump’s immigration status when she first moved to the United States in 1996. Her lawyer contended that she first came to New York on a tourist visa but worked legally on a string of visas for skilled immigrants.
She met Trump at a party 1998. Their relationship raised her profile as a celebrity and no doubt helped her become featured in New York gossip columns and on certain magazine covers, including a nude portrait on the January 2000 cover of British GQ, the Post said.
That’s the same year she began petitioning for the EB-1 visa, the Washington Post said. As Pakman pointed out, citing the Washington Post report, such a visa is usually reserved for renowned academic researchers, multinational business executives, Olympic athletes or Oscar-winning actors, “not random, relatively obscure models.”
For some reason at around 10 p.m. Sunday, Melania Trump’s personal Twitter account liked a tweet from a New York state resident linking to Pakman’s video, the Daily News said. The “like” remained in her feed as of early Monday, the Daily News added.
Pakman’s main argument is that a first lady shouldn’t have questionable immigration circumstances, especially when her husband is making an immigration crackdown a central policy of his administration.
Melania Trump’s ability to obtain a green card also may have made it easier for her parents Viktor and Amalija Knavs to immigrate to the United States under a family reunification process that Trump has derided as “chain migration, the Washington Post said.
Of course, it’s possible that Melania Trump herself didn’t like the tweet linking to the Pakman video. After all, it’s hard to believe she’d find it very flattering. Perhaps the person who liked the tweet is some rogue East Wing staffer who has access to her social media accounts. Perhaps she saw the tweet, was dismayed but accidentally pressed like.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the Daily News said.
But as the Daily News points out, this isn’t the first time that the first lady has made headlines with what seems to be a rogue tweet. In May 2017, she appeared to like a left-wing blogger’s social media post suggesting her marriage to Donald Trump was “distant.” But that “like” only remained for about an hour and a half.
Meanwhile, Melania Trump watchers were taking this rogue tweet as another possible example of how they think she tries to challenge the constraints of being married to President Trump — especially as his alleged infidelity with porn stars and Playboy playmates has been much in the news in the past couple months.
In January, Melania Trump abruptly backed out of accompanying the president to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, while she also bucked tradition and didn’t ride with him to the U.S. Capitol to listen to his State of the Union Address.
Then there is the ongoing watch over whether she and the president are holding hands during public appearances.
A possible instance of her rebuffing his affections surfaced on Friday, when ABC News footage caught her seeming to bat away his hand as they stepped off Air Force One in Charlotte, North Carolina to attend Rev. Billy Graham’s funeral.

But later Friday, the president and first lady were photographed, stepping off Air Force One in Florida. He seemed to have a firm grasp of her hand.
And, at an event at the U.S. Capitol commemorating Rev. Graham earlier last week, Trump visibly grabbed his wife’s hand as they walked together.
The president also was photographed putting his hand on her leg, as well as on the leg Vice President Mike Pence.
