After 25 days of skating — which is on the low side — the Rideau Canal Skateway is closed until next year.
Unseasonably warm weather is melting the ice beyond the ability of crews to do anything about it. Even the nights have been mild for the past week.
The number of skating days is better than last winter (we had only 18 days then) but otherwise it’s the fewest days since the National Capital Commission began counting them in 1995-1996.
Skating opened this year on Jan. 14. The total length of skating season — 36 days from start to finish, though closed on some of those days — was also shorter than normal.
Two winters ago we had 59 days of skating.
